School Council Training for Principals

Year 1 Principals:  School Council Training for School Leaders

Options:       10 hours           Effective Leadership of School Councils

                     10 hours           Data Driven Decision Making

  • Effective Leadership of School Councils will be available beginning April 2002. 

  • Data Driven Decision Making will be taught following the GAEL summer conference. 

  • Both involve 6 hours seat time and 4 hours field experience. 

  • SDU credit will be awarded.

  • Effective Leadership of School Councils prepares principals to begin a council. 

 

Year 2 Principals:  Student Achievement:  Framework for Analysis

 An extensive training program for school councils designed by the Georgia School Council Institute. The training is being offered for the first time this spring to school councils. This course, designed for principals and other school leaders, provides a preview of the training school councils will be offered. In addition to having information prior to school council members, principals taking this training will gain knowledge and skills that will enhance their instructional program, provide insights into the school improvement process, and improve data driven decision making. The training designed for school councils provides them with the skills and knowledge needed to take an in-depth look at student achievement in their schools. The content of this training is written in layman terms for the council member. The content of the course provides an understanding of and answers to the following questions:

What are our students learning?

How is my school performing?

Does the school organization maximize learning?

What are we doing to improve schools for teaching and learning?

 

  • Training sessions available to systems on a contract basis.

  • Open training sessions begin in May.  Date, time and place to be announced.

  • Student Achievement:  Framework for Analysis manual available from the School Council Institute

Year 1 School Councils:  School Councils:  Getting Started

 A five hour course providing a basic understanding of the mission and purpose of school councils, the various laws and regulations governing council activities, the responsibilities of council members, the procedures for conducting business, and a review of the various resources, tools and support services available.  School council members are given an introduction to the role that they play in the school improvement and student achievement initiative.   Development of a school council vision, mission, action plan, norms for effective meetings and planning for the annual report are included in this training.

Georgia School Council Handbook, 2nd Edition will be provided free to all participants who are trained by an Institute certified instructor.
